DTF Starter Pack | Everything You Need to Start | ZizoDTF

Learn More About DTF Starter Pack | Everything You Need to Start | ZizoDTF

What Is a DTF Starter Pack?

A DTF starter pack bundles the essential supplies you need to begin pressing custom DTF transfers onto garments. Whether you already own a heat press and want to try DTF for the first time, or you are setting up a small production workflow, a starter pack gives you everything in one order — no guesswork about which materials to buy separately.

ZizoDTF starter packs are designed for apparel decorators, small business owners, and print entrepreneurs who want to test the DTF process with quality materials before committing to larger supply orders. Every item in the pack is the same professional-grade material we use in our own production facility in Schaumburg, IL.

Who Is a DTF Starter Pack For?

DTF starter packs are built for anyone entering the custom apparel printing space:

  • New print businesses — Test the DTF workflow end-to-end before investing in bulk supplies. Understand the pressing process, evaluate transfer quality, and build confidence with real materials.
  • Heat press owners expanding into DTF — If you already own a heat press for sublimation or HTV and want to add DTF capability, a starter pack lets you try DTF without switching your entire supply chain.
  • Crafters and side hustlers — Producing custom t-shirts, hoodies, or tote bags for Etsy, local markets, or personal projects. A starter pack provides enough material for your first batch of products.
  • Existing DTF users switching suppliers — Order a starter pack to evaluate ZizoDTF material quality before placing a larger order. Compare adhesion, color vibrancy, and wash durability against your current supplies.

What You Need to Get Started with DTF

A complete DTF pressing setup requires three components:

  • DTF transfers — The printed film sheets with your design, ready to press. You can order custom DTF transfers with your own artwork or use our gang sheets to combine multiple designs on one sheet.
  • A heat press — A standard clamshell or swing-away heat press. DTF transfers press at 305-320°F for 10-15 seconds with medium-to-firm pressure. Household irons are not recommended — they cannot maintain consistent temperature and pressure.
  • Blank garments — DTF works on cotton, polyester, blends, nylon, and most other fabrics. We carry blank apparel selected for DTF compatibility, or you can use your own blanks from any supplier.

If you do not own a DTF printer, you do not need one. ZizoDTF prints your transfers for you — you only need a heat press to apply them to garments.

DTF Application Tips for Beginners

Getting clean, durable results with DTF transfers comes down to following the correct pressing process:

Pre-press your garment: Press the blank garment for 3-5 seconds before applying the transfer. This removes moisture and wrinkles that can interfere with adhesion.

Position the transfer: Place the transfer film face-down on the garment. Align your design where you want it to appear.

Press: Apply heat at 305-320°F with medium-to-firm pressure for 10-15 seconds. Use the lower temperature range for polyester to avoid scorching. Use the higher range for 100% cotton.

Cold peel: After pressing, wait 5-10 seconds for the transfer to cool before peeling the film. Peeling too early is the most common cause of adhesion failure for beginners.

Wash care: Wash finished garments inside out in cold water on a gentle cycle. Avoid bleach and fabric softeners. Tumble dry on low heat or air dry. With proper care, DTF transfers maintain quality through 40+ wash cycles.

Ready-to-Press vs Printing Your Own

There are two paths to DTF printing. Your starter pack experience will help you decide which is right for your business.

Ready-to-press transfers (no printer needed): Upload your design to ZizoDTF, we print it on DTF film with adhesive powder already applied and cured, and ship the finished transfer to you. You press it onto your garment with a heat press. This is the most cost-effective path for businesses that do not want to invest in a DTF printer, manage ink and film inventory, or handle white ink maintenance.

Printing your own (requires DTF printer): Purchase a DTF printer and supplies (ink, film, adhesive powder) and print transfers in-house. This gives you full control over production speed and per-unit cost at higher volumes, but requires equipment investment and ongoing maintenance — particularly white ink circulation to prevent clogging. See our DTF supplies collection for ink, film, and powder if you go this route.

Most new DTF businesses start with ready-to-press transfers and move to in-house printing once they reach consistent monthly volume.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a DTF printer to use a starter pack?

No. If you order ready-to-press DTF transfers from ZizoDTF, the printing is already done for you. You only need a heat press to apply the transfers to garments. A DTF printer is only necessary if you want to print your own transfers in-house.

What heat press temperature should I use for DTF transfers?

Press at 305-320°F (152-160°C) for 10-15 seconds with medium-to-firm pressure. Use the lower end of the temperature range for polyester and blended fabrics. Use the higher end for 100% cotton. Always cold peel — wait 5-10 seconds after pressing before removing the film.

Can I use DTF transfers on any color garment?

Yes. DTF transfers include a white ink underbase layer that makes colors appear vibrant on both light and dark garments. Unlike sublimation, which only works on white or light-colored polyester, DTF works on any fabric color.

How many transfers can I make with a starter pack?

The number of transfers depends on the specific starter pack contents and the size of your designs. Check the product listing for the exact contents included in each pack. If you need more transfers, you can always order additional custom transfers or gang sheets at any time with no minimums.

Is there a minimum order for starter packs?

No. There is no minimum order on any ZizoDTF product, including starter packs. Order one pack to test, or order multiple packs if you are setting up for a workshop or training session.

What garments work best with DTF for beginners?

Start with 100% combed ringspun cotton t-shirts. Cotton provides the strongest adhesion and the most forgiving pressing experience for beginners. Once you are comfortable with the process, expand to blends, polyester, and heavier garments like hoodies and sweatshirts. Browse our blank apparel collection for garments tested with DTF transfers.
