DTF Transfer Film

DTF transfer film is the print surface your design lands on before hot-melt powder is applied and the transfer is pressed onto fabric. Choosing the right film matters: a film that feeds cleanly through your printer, holds ink without bleeding, and releases cleanly onto the garment after pressing will save you wasted material and failed prints.

Look for film with consistent thickness, smooth coating on the printable side, and a reliable peel characteristic — cold peel film is the most common for DTF. Film is typically sold by the roll in standard widths (13", 24", and 30" are the most common for desktop and commercial DTF printers). Match your film width to your printer's maximum print width to minimize waste.

DTF Ink (CMYK + White)

DTF printing uses a dual-layer ink system. A full-color CMYK layer carries the design's image detail and color. A white underbase layer is printed beneath or over the CMYK (depending on your printer's workflow) to provide opacity and ensure colors pop on both light and dark fabrics. Without a proper white layer, prints on dark garments will look washed out.

When selecting DTF ink, key considerations include:

  • Viscosity: Ink must flow cleanly through your print heads without clogging. Use ink formulated specifically for DTF — do not substitute sublimation or pigment ink.
  • Color gamut: High-quality DTF ink produces vibrant, accurate colors at 1800 DPI resolution.
  • White ink maintenance: White DTF ink is thicker and settles faster than CMYK. Printers with white channels require regular agitation or circulation to prevent head clogging.
  • Compatibility: Always verify ink compatibility with your specific printer model before purchasing in bulk.

Need finished transfers without the ink management overhead? Our custom DTF transfer service handles all printing — you press, we print.

DTF Adhesive Powder

Hot-melt adhesive powder is applied to the wet ink immediately after printing, before the film passes through the curing oven. The powder melts and bonds the ink to the film, creating the transfer layer that adheres to fabric under heat and pressure. Getting your powder application right is one of the most important steps in producing durable, wash-resistant DTF transfers.

DTF adhesive powder is available in fine, medium, and coarse grind grades. Finer powder produces softer hand feel and works well for detailed designs and thinner garments. Medium-grade powder is the general-purpose choice for most apparel applications. Coarse powder is used for thicker or textured substrates. Most print shops start with medium-grade and adjust based on their garment types. Store powder in a sealed container away from humidity — moisture causes clumping and uneven application.

Blank Apparel for DTF

DTF transfers work on virtually any fabric — cotton, polyester, blends, nylon, and more — on both light and dark garments. For print shops that want a single-source workflow, we carry blank apparel including t-shirts and sweatshirts that are ready to press. Ordering blanks and transfers together simplifies your supply chain and ensures your garments arrive press-ready alongside your transfers.

If you run UV DTF stickers alongside your garment printing, check our UV DTF gang sheets — they apply to hard surfaces like tumblers, bottles, and wood without a heat press.

How to Choose the Right DTF Supplies

The right supplies depend on your printer model, your typical garment mix, and your production volume. Here is a straightforward framework:

  • Match film width to your printer: Ordering film wider than your printer's maximum print width wastes material and creates feed issues.
  • Buy ink in volumes you will use within 3-6 months: DTF ink, especially white, has a shelf life. White ink that sits too long becomes difficult to agitate back into suspension.
  • Start with medium-grade powder: It handles the widest range of garment types and is the easiest to apply evenly by hand or with a powder shaker.
  • Test before committing to bulk: Order a smaller quantity of a new supply, run a test print batch, and verify adhesion and wash durability before placing a large order.

Frequently Asked Questions

What DTF supplies do I need to get started?

A functional DTF setup requires four core consumables: DTF transfer film (matched to your printer width), DTF ink (a full CMYK set plus white), hot-melt adhesive powder, and a curing method — either an oven or a heat press with a curing sheet. Beyond consumables, you need a DTF-capable printer and a heat press to complete the transfer application process.

Can I use any DTF ink in my printer, or does it need to be brand-specific?

DTF ink must be compatible with your specific printer model and print head type. Using incompatible ink can clog heads and void warranties. Always verify compatibility before purchasing. If you are unsure, contact us and we can help point you to the right product for your setup.

How do I apply DTF adhesive powder correctly?

Apply powder immediately after printing, while the ink is still wet. Spread it evenly across the print area and shake off the excess. Uneven powder application leads to inconsistent adhesion and can cause peeling at the edges. After powdering, the film passes through a curing oven (or is cured with a heat press on low heat) to melt and bond the powder. Most failures come from rushing the curing step — make sure the powder is fully melted before pressing.

What is the difference between fine, medium, and coarse DTF powder?

The grind grade affects hand feel and adhesion characteristics. Fine powder produces a softer, less stiff print and works well for detailed designs on lightweight fabrics. Medium-grade is the standard all-purpose choice suitable for most t-shirts and sweatshirts. Coarse powder provides stronger adhesion on heavier or textured materials. Most shops stock medium-grade as their primary powder and use fine-grade for soft-hand specialty orders.

How long do DTF transfers made with these supplies last after washing?

With properly cured transfers applied at correct heat press settings (typically 280-320°F, 10-15 seconds, medium pressure), DTF transfers are wash-resistant for 40+ wash cycles with proper garment care — washing inside out in cold water without direct ironing on the print. Durability depends on the quality of your consumables, the precision of your curing process, and how the garment is cared for after pressing.

I do not own a DTF printer. Can I still use ZizoDTF?

Yes. If you do not have printing equipment, you can order finished, ready-to-press DTF transfers directly from us — no minimums, no setup fees. Browse our DTF transfers and gang sheets, upload your design, and we print and ship to you. You apply the transfers with your heat press. It is the most cost-effective way to offer custom printing without the equipment investment.
